The Three-Day Departure of
Mrs. Annette Zinn
— A Novel —
Stones have no agency.
They survive in colonies of other stones.
They are buried under mountains.
They fall, shaken, by earthquakes.
They are scooped up by bulldozers, crushed to
become gravel,
blown to bits in war, brutally mined, and made
into wedding rings.
Then, one day, a stone lands in sunlight.
A glint of pyrite on the stone’s surface
catches the eye.
The stone is slung into a denim pocket.
Later, fingers draw it out of the denim darkness.
It is placed, ceremonial, among other stones.
Rocks, pebbles, stones — they have no agency.
“I always look forward to getting to know
Mary E. Carter’s characters. The Jews, and the
righteous non-Jews as well, have a pintele yid: a
spark of Jewishness that helps them navigate this
complex world with sensitivity. I enjoyed the
exploration of the soul hovering for three days
and was intrigued with the idea that it might
remember details of events that were forgotten or
hidden during its time in this world.
During her three-day departure, Mrs. Annette
Zinn discovers that her memories have the
potential to serve as a blessing.”
